Waves and harsh rain combined lash at the sides of the Odyssey. The deck is soaked. A tropical storm is a very powerful weather system, a disturbance of the atmosphere where massive cloud formations, strong winds and heavy rainfall can be disruptive. This storm is a rotating system of thunderstorms with organized circulation, deriving its energy from the heat and moisture of the warm ocean waters, developing first as a tropical depression, intensifying into a more powerful storm, a typhoon, leading to heavy rainfall and powerful winds.

Outrunning a typhoon involves navigating rough, tempestuous seas characterized by powerful, billowing waves, blinding spray with near zero visibility. The goal is to maintain "steering-way," meaning the ship keeps moving forward to steer through the waves with its bow pointing into them, rather than getting broadsided and capsized by them, while simultaneously staying a safe distance from shorelines to avoid being driven onto them by the storm's force. Our captain is the best, monitoring and guiding the Odyssey.

We arrive and anchor near Boracay Island, Philippines, tender to shore. It is a beautiful, sunny Sunday with a few scattered clouds.

Boracay is a small, bone-shaped tropical island off the northwest tip of Panay Island in the Western Visayas region of the central Philippines with hilly northern and southern ends and gently sloping areas near the shore. It is approximately 196 miles south of Manila. The island covers a total land area of 2,550 acres and has a population of approximately 38,000. Boracay has a tropical climate.

Boracay has structure and stations, divided into three main areas: Station 1 is known for its luxury resorts and more exclusive atmosphere, Station 2 is the vibrant center, the busiest area, for shopping, dining, and entertainment, and Station 3 offers a quieter zone, a more tranquil and relaxed atmosphere.

The island wasn't always a tourist hot spot; it was once a simple agricultural community. Its tourism potential was recognized by a German writer who called it "Paradise on Earth" in 1978.

Boracay’s main draw is its award-winning White Beach, a long stretch of world-renowned powdery fine, white sand, feeling soft and cool underfoot, and waters known for their clarity, crystal-clear, ranging from turquoise to blue. Boracay’s vibrant atmosphere makes it a top destination for both relaxation and adventure. Whether seeking relaxation or adventure, the island offers diverse activities like swimming, sunbathing, island hopping, discovering hidden coves, and water sports, including kite surfing, helmet diving, walking on the seabed, exploring the rich marine life, paddleboarding, windsurfing, snorkeling, and scuba diving, as well as parasailing, getting a breathtaking bird’s-eye view of Boracay as you soar above the crystal-clear waters, jet skiing, a high-speed thrill, and kayaking.

Visit a unique spot at White Beach called “Willy's Rock,” a volcanic rock formation with a statue of the Virgin Mary on top.

A distinct alternative to White Beach is Puka Beach, known for its coarse, white sand scattered with puka shells.

Boracay is globally recognized for its spectacular, picturesque sunset views. The daily spectacle of the sun painting the sky with orange, pink, and purple hues is a magical experience.

Following serious environmental degradation, Boracay underwent rehabilitation, an environmentally conscious transformation, transforming into an eco-friendly destination, banning single-use plastics, paper bags, edible straws, biodegradable cups, and a shift to electric transport.

The first settlers of Boracay were a Negrito ethnic group called the Ati, arriving from Borneo 20,000 to 30,000 years ago. Ati people are described as being generally short in stature, with dark skin, and curly hair and known for unique customs, traditions, and herbal medicine. They face challenges preserving their culture and traditions due to displacement and economic marginalization. Government and community efforts are underway to address these issues.

Indulge in fresh seafood and local delicacies like mango shakes.

Experience the island's lively nightlife, especially the vibrant fire dance performances.

Boracay provides a unique contrast from adrenaline-pumping water sports to relaxing strolls along the beach, the island caters to different interests, making it a dynamic destination and with its lively, resort-filled environment and the option to find quieter spots. The island has a relaxed, "laid-back" vibe, a perfect setting for unwinding, feeling a sense of freedom and pleasure, enjoying the tranquil environment, making it easy to find peace. Boracay offers a blend of energy and peace.
