October 27, 2024 Marti Eicholz The Canary Islands, an enchanting archipelago comprised of seven main islands, are affectionately referred to as the “Canaries.” Nestled between mainland Spain and the northwest coast of Morocco, these islands offer a unique blend of cultures and landscapes. Though they are politically part of Spain, their geographical location places them just off the African continent, adding to their distinctive charm and diversity. Forged by Fire: The islands’ dramatic origins can be traced back millions of years to a period of intense volcanic activity. Powerful eruptions and persistent hot spots beneath the Earth’s crust gave birth to these landforms, sending torrents of lava and molten rock streaming to the surface. This fiery genesis has left a lasting legacy, with the islands still exhibiting volcanic features such as bubble grottoes and intricate lava tubes. The region’s volcanic nature remains evident today, as seen during the significant eruptions in 2021. Our vessel, The Odyssey, granted us the freedom to explore each island with ease, unhindered by the limitations of traditional travel between landmasses. Each island within the Canaries boasts its own distinct personality, showcasing a remarkable variety of landscapes, climates, and cultural experiences. This remarkable diversity ensures that every stop on our journey offered something new and captivating to discover. PORTS OF CALL: Arrecife, Lanzarote: As the island closest to the Sahara Desert, Lanzarote enjoys the warmest climate of the archipelago. The island’s landscape is defined by its dramatic black and red volcanic terrain, which creates an otherworldly backdrop for exploration. Arrecife, the vibrant capital of Lanzarote, is a multicultural city that combines the cosmopolitan energy of a bustling metropolis with the relaxed atmosphere of a small port town. Although it pulses with life, Arrecife retains the intimate feel of a “tiny thriving port” or even a “sleepy seaside town.” The city’s name, meaning “Reef,” reflects its origins as a traditional fishing village nestled around a natural bay. Here, the picturesque lagoon is dotted with boats gently bobbing in the water throughout the day. Exploring Arrecife is delightfully simple, as the city is compact and easily navigable on foot. You can traverse the entire city within half a day, making it perfect for leisurely strolls. Much of the seafront is pedestrian-friendly, as are the shopping districts, harbor, and marina front. Adventurous visitors might choose to jog, cycle, walk, or even hop onto an eco-friendly electric scooter to discover all the city has to offer. As you wander along the shoreline, be sure to listen for the lively chatter of parrots perched in the trees — you’ll likely hear their calls before catching a glimpse of their colorful feathers. |
