October 24, 2024 Marti Eicholz Today, The Odyssey arrived in Casablanca — known affectionately by locals as “Casa” — a vibrant city teeming with energy. Home to 3.5 million people, Casablanca stands as Morocco’s largest urban center, a true powerhouse that pulses with life and ambition. The city is often renowned as a cultural capital, a place where tradition and modernity coexist in dynamic harmony. Upon arrival, our team — which included an urban planner, a gardener, and an industrialist — could immediately sense the city’s forward-thinking spirit. There is a strong emphasis on modernization and expansion, with new infrastructure projects constantly reshaping the skyline. Casablanca’s economic importance cannot be overstated. It serves as the region’s economic engine, attracting major international corporations such as McDonald’s and Starbucks, and offering countless opportunities for business and industry. This economic vitality has cemented its reputation as the industrial heart of Morocco. One of the most striking features of Casablanca is its unique architectural landscape. The cityscape is an eclectic blend, seamlessly weaving together elements of Art Nouveau and Art Deco — remnants of its French colonial past — with distinct North African, American, Islamic, Moorish, and Roman influences. Walking through its streets, you’re surrounded by buildings that tell stories of history and innovation. True to its name, Casablanca — Spanish for “white house” — is a city where nearly every building is painted a brilliant white. This gives the metropolis a radiant, gleaming appearance, especially under the Moroccan sun, making the city both visually stunning and unmistakably unique. Casablanca holds a distinct charm for the younger set, offering a vibrant atmosphere and unique experiences that cater to a dynamic crowd. Set aside an hour or two to wander through the enchanting Medina of Casablanca, where time seems to slow down and the city’s authentic spirit unfolds at your feet. Unlike some other bustling medinas, this one is known for its welcoming ambiance and less aggressive vendors, creating a relaxed environment that allows you to truly soak in the surroundings. The Medina, as we know it today, was meticulously rebuilt in the 18th century following a catastrophic earthquake, which means that traces of the ancient Roman city of Anfa, dating back to 15 BC, are sparse. However, what the Medina lacks in ancient ruins, it more than makes up for with its rich tapestry of history and culture. As you meander through the labyrinthine alleyways, you’ll encounter a remarkable array of landmarks, including places of worship that reflect the city’s diverse heritage: synagogues, churches, and mosques coexist harmoniously, painting a picture of Casablanca’s inclusive spirit. Every step through the Medina offers new opportunities for observation — watching local residents go about their daily routines, sensing the rhythm of everyday life, and feeling the warmth that gives the old city its “homey” atmosphere. The presence of contemporary murals injects a burst of youthful energy and creativity, seamlessly blending tradition with modern expression. No visit to Casablanca would be complete without seeing the awe-inspiring Hassan II Mosque, an iconic symbol of the city. This architectural masterpiece stands as the largest mosque in Morocco and boasts the second tallest minaret in the world, a testament to both the city’s religious significance and its innovative spirit. Perched majestically on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the Hassan II Mosque commands attention with its breathtaking setting. This iconic waterfront location holds deep religious significance in Islam, symbolizing a meeting point between the divine and humanity — aptly described as where “God and Mortals” converge. The mosque’s architecture is a testament to opulence and Moroccan craftsmanship: intricate wood and stone carvings, gleaming marble floors, soaring ceilings adorned with gold leaf, and vibrant, geometric tilework lining the walls. Inside, the mosque can accommodate up to 25,000 worshippers, while the vast exterior courtyard welcomes an additional 80,000 people. One of its most remarkable features is the glass flooring, allowing worshippers to gaze upon the ocean below as they pray, fostering a unique spiritual connection. After soaking in the grandeur of the Hassan II Mosque, take a leisurely stroll along La Corniche, the scenic promenade that hugs the Atlantic coastline. This peaceful walk offers a chance to reflect on the mosque’s immense beauty and significance, while also introducing you to “Casa’s” lively atmosphere, complete with abundant shopping opportunities and bustling department stores. The Morocco Mall offers an unparalleled shopping experience, featuring 350 stores that cater to lovers of luxury and high-end fashion. For those who consider shopping a favorite pastime, this destination is truly a paradise, with an impressive array of designer boutiques and exclusive brands to explore. Venturing into a different part of the city, visitors will discover The Souk — a vibrant marketplace that has preserved the rich traditions of Moroccan craftsmanship. Here, you can browse through stalls brimming with authentic goods such as hand-stitched slippers, elegant kaftans, aromatic spices, and fragrant oils, each reflecting the cultural heritage of the region. Adding to the city’s allure, this area is home to the world’s largest musical fountain, where a hundred brilliantly colored water jets move in perfect harmony with the music, creating a dazzling display that captivates onlookers of all ages. Not far away lies Mohammed V Square, affectionately known as “Pigeons Square.” This lively plaza is a hub of activity, where flocks of birds mingle with local families and children, creating a cheerful and welcoming atmosphere that embodies the spirit of Casablanca. Just a few blocks from the square, Arab League Park beckons as the city’s “green lung.” This peaceful haven features rows of meticulously cared-for palm trees and tranquil reflecting pools, offering an ideal retreat for those seeking a moment of calm amid the city’s energetic pace. As our time in Casablanca comes to an end, I can’t help but echo the sentiment once expressed by Ingrid Bergman: “I feel that Casablanca has a life of its own…And it’s Mystical.” The city’s unique blend of modern luxury, timeless tradition, and vibrant energy truly leaves a lasting impression. Now, we look forward to a serene night at sea followed by two leisurely days on the water, giving us time to reflect on the enchanting experiences we’ve had in this remarkable city and time to reflect on this journey so far. |
