The journey from Pago Pago to Bora Bora is a significant undertaking, spanning several days and characterized by long, uninterrupted stretches of open ocean. This classic South Pacific passage demands both skill and resilience from the crew, as they navigate rolling swells and frequent tropical squalls, with the rhythm of the sea setting the pace for each day. Despite the challenges, the reward is immense—each sunrise and sunset at sea is a reminder of the vast beauty and isolation of these waters, and every mile brings a deeper camaraderie among those aboard. As we made landfall, the sense of pride in our captain and crew is notable.

Upon arrival, Bora Bora unveils itself as a true jewel—often called the "Pearl of the Pacific"—nestled within French Polynesia's Society Islands. Home to approximately 10,000 residents, the island exudes a tranquil harmony, not only among its people but also with the many gentle, ownerless dogs that roam freely, embodying the peaceful spirit of the place. Bora Bora’s landscape is mesmerizing, featuring a dramatic volcanic peak, Mt. Otemanu, which rises above a turquoise lagoon encircled by a vibrant coral reef and dotted with small islets called motus. The lush green mountains descend to powdery white beaches, providing a setting so stunning that it has served as the backdrop for films like Couples Retreat.

Excitement buzzes among my fellow shipmates as they look forward to experiencing Bora Bora’s legendary activities. The promise of world-class snorkeling and diving in crystal-clear waters teeming with manta rays, dolphins, sea turtles, and vibrant fish is irresistible. Some plan to hike the verdant trails or simply unwind in the island’s luxurious overwater bungalows—many outfitted with glass floors for observing the aquatic life just below. The anticipation is unmistakable, akin to the eager joy of a child awaiting Christmas morning.

Celebrating the holidays in Bora Bora offers a unique twist on seasonal traditions. The air is warm and humid, the atmosphere festive with a distinct Polynesian flair, and the landscape is lush from the wet season’s abundant rains. While tropical showers and the chance of cyclones are ever-present, they only add to the island’s vivid greenery and sense of adventure. Instead of snow, we are surrounded by soft white sand and the intoxicating scent of tropical blooms. Holiday feasts here are a celebration of local flavors, featuring fresh seafood, sweet fruits, and coconut in abundance. Cultural festivities abound, with traditional weaving, lively drumming, and extravagant celebrations capped by dazzling fireworks. It’s a magical, sun-soaked season where we trade images of snowy landscapes for the warmth of festive drumming and the unparalleled beauty of paradise.

As soon as the Odyssey anchors, my shipmates tender to port, eagerly scattering to begin their own island adventures. Some set out to explore the lagoon’s stunning turquoise waters by boat, catamaran, or jet ski, stopping to snorkel in colorful coral gardens and swim among shimmering schools of fish. Others delighted in the thrill of feeding stingrays and even sharks, while another group checked in to iconic overwater bungalows, ready to savor the quintessential Bora Bora experience—like waking to breakfast delivered by canoe.

There is a transformative quality to Bora Bora that is hard to articulate. The island’s unreal turquoise waters, radiant sunsets, and abundant greenery inspire a profound sense of peace and rejuvenation. Whether relaxing in a private bungalow above the lagoon or wandering the shoreline, it’s easy to feel as though time itself slows down. Each moment is filled with awe and gratitude for nature’s artistry, and worries seem to melt away, replaced by deep contentment and joy.

The moniker "Pearl of the Pacific" suits Bora Bora perfectly, as its lush mountains gracefully meet the dazzling blues of the lagoon, creating an otherworldly beauty that captivates all who visit.

As Christmas Eve arrives, we bid farewell to Bora Bora, our hearts full of its magic. Aboard the Odyssey, we’re swept into a world where the magic of Christmas is alive in every detail. Twinkling lights drape along polished rails, garlands sparkle above every doorway, and grand, radiant, colorful trees stand as beacons of holiday enchantment—even in the heart of the open sea. The spirit of the season found a permanent home here, wrapping each corridor and gathering space in a sense of warmth and wonder.

The Odyssey sets sail once more, bound for Raiatea, where we look forward to waking up on Christmas morning in another enchanting corner of French Polynesia.
