November 26–27, 2024 Marti Eicholz As dawn broke, a fresh and invigorating breeze welcomed The Odyssey as it gracefully docked in the vibrant port of Basseterre, St. Kitts. The island’s rich history is immediately evident — St. Kitts, the earliest Caribbean colony, holds the distinguished title of the “Caribbean Mother Colony.” Gaining its independence in 1983, the island has thrived, becoming renowned for its legacy of sugar refining as well as the production of molasses, cotton, salt, and a variety of tropical fruits. St. Kitts enchants visitors with its lush, exotic landscape — a true tropical paradise. This volcanic island is adorned with pristine, uncrowded beaches, dramatic lava formations, winding ravines, dense tropical forests, fertile valleys, tranquil lagoons, and a stunning underwater world waiting to be explored. For nature lovers, St. Kitts is a dream come true, bursting with natural beauty and adventure at every turn. One of the most remarkable features of St. Kitts is its thriving population of Vervet Monkeys, brought to the island over three centuries ago. Today, these clever and curious creatures outnumber the island’s human residents. They are often seen darting across fields to nibble on crops or playfully swinging through the branches that line the roads, adding a unique charm to the island’s rural scenery. The capital city, Basseterre, stands as one of the oldest urban centers in the Eastern Caribbean. With a population of around 20,000, this English-speaking city is compact enough to explore comfortably on foot. Its heart is Independence Square — a place with a complex history, once the site of slave auctions, now a symbol of freedom and community gathering. No visit to St. Kitts is complete without a stop at Carribelle Batik, where you can witness the intricate process of batik-making firsthand. This site is nestled within a breathtaking botanical garden, anchored by a majestic 350-year-old raintree. As you wander the grounds, you might catch glimpses of rare birds and butterflies fluttering near an indoor waterfall and Asian-inspired statues. The palm garden alone features over one hundred distinct species, and the surrounding gardens offer vibrant displays of orchids, herbs, cacti, and vines, interspersed with elegant sculptures and historical antiques. To truly experience the island’s character, board the famous Sugar Train. Originally constructed to move sugar cane across the island’s plantations, this charming double-decker railway now offers a scenic tour. The ride circles the island, unveiling panoramic views of towering volcanic mountains, the Atlantic Ocean on one side, and the Caribbean Sea on the other, all while passing stretches of beautiful beaches. It’s a journey that offers both historical insight and breathtaking scenery. For those seeking a slower pace, horseback riding provides a gentle, immersive way to traverse the countryside. Wind your way through lush rainforests, past the remnants of old sugar mills and expansive cane fields, soaking in the tranquil ambiance of rural St. Kitts. Adventurers will find their haven in the Central Reserve National Park, a dense and ever-expanding jungle that is among the rarest types of forest in the world. Embark on a four-hour guided walking tour, where you’ll hike beneath a towering green canopy, skirt picturesque waterfalls, and encounter a symphony of rainforest sounds. Along the way, discover an astonishing diversity of wildlife and hundreds of plant species, from giant trees to vibrant flowering plants. For an extra thrill, take to the treetops on a zipline, soaring above the forest for a truly exhilarating, monkey’s-eye view of this remarkable ecosystem. Embark on an unforgettable adventure by climbing Mount Liamuiga, the island’s majestic extinct volcano. Upon reaching the summit, you’ll be treated to breathtaking panoramic vistas from the highest point on St. Kitts. Don’t miss the opportunity to gaze into the renowned ‘Giant’s Salad Bowl,’ a lush, mile-wide crater brimming with vibrant foliage — an awe-inspiring reward for your energetic trek. History enthusiasts will find Bremstone Hill Fortress a fascinating destination. As one of the largest forts in the Caribbean, its imposing walls are constructed from dark volcanic stone, reflecting the island’s unique geology. Today, the fortress houses an informative museum, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the rich history of St. Kitts and discover the island’s complex past involving colonial France and Great Britain. St. Kitts boasts a flavorful national dish: Salt Fish and Dumplings. This hearty meal features stewed salt fish, seasoned breadfruit, coconut dumplings, and spicy plantains, capturing the essence of local culinary traditions. Soursop and breadfruit, both strikingly green native fruits, are celebrated for their nutritional benefits — soursop is especially prized for its antioxidant properties that support pancreatic health. Other popular fare includes jerk chicken, spicy curry, and roti, while rum remains the island’s signature beverage. If you’re a golf enthusiast, the island offers excellent courses that promise a memorable experience. Should you find yourself unable to secure a tee time, there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy. Embrace the island’s stunning coastline by indulging in water-based recreation. Relax on pristine golden or white sandy beaches lined with swaying palm trees, and bask in the warmth of the clear, turquoise waters. Adventurous visitors can swim alongside graceful sea turtles or explore vibrant underwater worlds teeming with tropical fish by snorkeling or scuba diving. Water sports are plentiful, with opportunities for kayaking, jet skiing, surfboarding, and paddle boarding ensuring endless fun for all skill levels. For a change of scenery, hop aboard a catamaran for the short 2.5-mile journey to Nevis, St. Kitts’ lush and verdant sister island. Nevis is home to its own dramatic volcano, which often appears to have its summit nestled among the clouds, creating a captivating landscape perfect for exploration. St. Kitts is a destination overflowing with charm and authentic island spirit. The warmth and hospitality of its people are truly unmatched, making every visitor feel right at home, while their famous chili sauce delivers a memorable burst of flavor that adds zest to any meal. As the day draws to a close, the island transforms; evenings in St. Kitts are nothing short of magical. Take a few quiet moments to watch the sunset — an unforgettable spectacle where the sky gradually shifts through brilliant shades of gold, orange, and fiery red. With the last rays of sunlight fading, we bid farewell to St. Kitts and set sail for Philipsburg, St. Maarten, carrying with us fond memories of this enchanting place. |
