November 28–29, 2024 Marti Eicholz As the sun rises over Philipsburg, St. Maarten on Thanksgiving morning, The Odyssey is welcomed by a golden light that sets the stage for a day of celebration and gratitude. This is a time to pause, appreciate life’s simple pleasures, breathe deeply, reflect, and connect with loved ones. The atmosphere buzzes with excitement, as the island becomes the epicenter for those seeking both relaxation and adventure on this special holiday. Philipsburg, recognized as the premier cruise port in the Caribbean, truly lives up to its reputation today. With four major cruise lines docking simultaneously, the island is bustling with activity, welcoming around 15,000 visitors eager to experience its unique charm and vibrant culture. The influx of guests on Thanksgiving Day adds a festive energy to the already lively streets. St. Maarten stands out as a fascinating Caribbean destination, famous for being the world’s smallest landmass shared by two different nations: the southern part is Dutch, while the less-developed northern two-thirds are French. This harmonious coexistence creates the world’s longest open border, allowing visitors to move seamlessly between the two sides without noticing any boundary. The blend of cultures is palpable in everything from the local cuisine to the languages spoken, offering a truly multicultural experience. The Brown Pelican, proudly soaring above the turquoise waters, serves as the national symbol and a reminder of the island’s rich natural heritage. St. Maarten is a true kaleidoscope of experiences, ready to enchant every traveler. This sun-drenched, magical oasis spans just thirteen square miles but is packed with wonders: thirty-seven glistening, powdery beaches border the island, where azure waters invite you to relax or explore. For thrill-seekers and adventure lovers, St. Maarten does not disappoint. The crystal-clear sea is perfect for snorkeling and scuba diving, revealing vibrant marine life beneath the surface. If you prefer action above water, you can zipline through lush rainforests, ride the waves on jet skis, or soar high while parasailing, all while taking in breathtaking island views. There’s truly something for everyone, from serene beach lounging to exhilarating outdoor activities. Philipsburg itself, though small — with fewer than 1,500 residents — offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The capital’s layout is simple: a quaint, four-street stretch less than a mile long, filled with brightly colored houses, eclectic shops, and inviting restaurants. Everything is within easy reach, making exploration a delight. Whether you’re strolling along the lively boardwalk or savoring local flavors, you’ll find Philipsburg’s charm impossible to resist. St. Maarten is a paradise for shopaholics and bargain hunters alike, drawing visitors from around the world to its renowned duty-free and sales-tax-free stores. Here, shoppers can browse an impressive array of luxury goods, from designer clothing and fine jewelry to electronics and unique local merchandise. The bustling inner streets are lined with endless shopping opportunities, making it easy to find the perfect souvenir or gift to take home. One of the island’s most distinctive attractions is the Guavaberry Emporium, a charming small factory dedicated to the production of guavaberry liqueur. The guavaberry, a small red berry native to the Caribbean, is harvested from the hills at the center of the island. At the emporium, these wild berries are blended with cane sugar and a medley of aromatic spices to create Guavaberry Rum — a drink celebrated for its woodsy, bittersweet flavor that’s quite different from the taste of guava. This local specialty is a must-try for anyone seeking an authentic taste of St. Maarten. Food enthusiasts will be delighted to discover that St. Maarten is often hailed as a Gourmet Capital, boasting more than 300 exceptional restaurants. These establishments specialize in European cuisine infused with Caribbean flair, offering a diverse range of flavors and culinary experiences. One of the island’s culinary highlights is its National Dish: conch and dumplings. This hearty meal features succulent conch, a large sea snail, served with soft dumplings in a hot and spicy sauce, embodying the island’s vibrant and bold tastes. History buffs can explore the rich cultural heritage of St. Maarten at the St. Maarten Museum, which showcases a fascinating collection of artifacts from the Indigenous Arawak people. Originally hailing from Venezuela, the Arawaks were known for their peaceful nature, love of music, games, and dance, and their aversion to conflict. The museum provides valuable insights into their way of life and their enduring influence on the island’s culture. For fans of science fiction and cinema, the Yoda Museum is a true hidden gem. Dedicated to Star Wars enthusiasts, this museum houses an extensive collection of Star Wars memorabilia alongside exhibits from other beloved films, making it a must-visit destination for movie lovers of all ages. History comes alive at the ruins of 17th-century Fort Amsterdam, a significant historical site perched on a nearby peninsula. Here, visitors can wander through the remnants of the fort, learning about the island’s storied past and the cultures that have shaped its identity over the centuries. For those seeking relaxation by the sea, Great Bay Beach offers a stunning escape right in the heart of downtown Philipsburg. This glorious stretch of pristine white sand meets calm, shallow turquoise waters, making it ideal for swimming and sunbathing. If you prefer to keep your toes out of the sand, you can enjoy a leisurely stroll along the paved promenade known as The Broadwalk, which runs parallel to the beach and offers breathtaking views of the ocean — perfect for an afternoon walk without ever stepping onto the beach itself. One of the most popular attractions on the island is the vibrant and energetic Maho Beach. Here, both locals and visitors gather to witness the thrilling spectacle of airplanes making their dramatic descent just overhead, skimming the turquoise waters before landing at the nearby airport. The scene is a photographer’s dream, with jetliners and smaller aircraft alike soaring low above sunbathers and beachgoers, creating an exhilarating atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean. As our ship gently sets course for Road Town in Tortola, nestled in the beautiful British Virgin Islands, we take a moment to reflect on our unforgettable time in St. Maarten. This Caribbean gem, known for its welcoming spirit and the inspiring motto “Always Progressing,” leaves us with lasting memories of its natural beauty and vibrant culture as we bid it a fond farewell. |
