As the morning unfolds, clouds drift across the sky, gradually revealing radiant patches of blue as our ship glides toward Road Town, Tortola, in the heart of the British Virgin Islands. The air is alive with the movement of slender brown boobies — gregarious seabirds that skim the ocean’s surface and seek out quiet spots to rest upon our vessel, adding a touch of wild beauty to the journey.

The origins of Tortola’s name are steeped in local lore. While many believe Christopher Columbus named the island Tortola, meaning “Turtle Dove,” historical accounts reveal that he actually called it Santa Ana. Over time, the name evolved, capturing the imagination and affection of those who call the island home and those who visit its shores.

Tortola stands as the largest and most vibrant of the British Virgin Islands, offering more than just a destination — it embodies a way of life.
