October 7–9, 2024 Marti Eicholz The Odyssey departs from the Basque Country after a memorable stay. I spent two days exploring Bilbao, renowned for its striking Guggenheim Museum. The city’s blend of remarkable architecture and contemporary art left a lasting impression. Wandering through the city’s narrow streets and lively cider taverns, soaking in the unique atmosphere. I meandered through the charming old town, once a bustling whaling and fishing district, where remnants of Roman walls and ancient baths still stand as silent witnesses to the past. Sampling Basque cuisine was a highlight — hearty stews made with tuna and potatoes or tender lamb were particularly satisfying. Pintxos, the region’s celebrated tapas, delighted me with their variety: fresh seafood, meats, olives, and peppers artfully arranged atop slices of bread. Of course, I couldn’t resist trying paella, the area’s most famous dish. |
