As the Odyssey anchors off the coast, ship’s tenders transport us to the shores of Ilha Grande, a truly remarkable destination. The name “Ilha Grande” means “Big Island,” and it lives up to its title with seventy-five square miles of breathtaking scenery. The island’s rugged, mountainous heart is covered in untouched Atlantic rainforest, while its coastline is lined with mangrove swamps and dazzling stretches of immaculate white sand. The beaches here are so pure and powdery that they seem almost surreal, and the natural beauty is complemented by an atmosphere of tranquility that is rare to find.

Ilha Grande has a fascinating, if sometimes somber, past. Over the centuries, it has played host to a leper colony and served as a docking port for enslaved Africans en route to Rio de Janeiro. In more recent history, the island was notorious for its high-security prison, which housed both political prisoners and violent criminals. The destruction of the prison in 1994 marked the end of its long isolation and ushered in a new era for the island. As evening descends, I find myself savoring my favorite drink while watching the sun set in a blaze of color over the horizon. The air cools, and I’m filled with gratitude for another stunning day at sea — moments like these are truly priceless.

Now, The Odyssey is prepared to chart a course along the lush, mountainous coast, heading toward our next destination. However, recent updates have brought news of changes to our itinerary: due to ongoing operational challenges, the planned stops in Buzios and Cabo Frio have been canceled. Instead, we are granted an extended stay in the vibrant city of Rio de Janeiro, increasing our visit to a full four and a half days. This unexpected change presents an incredible opportunity to dive deeper into the city’s rich culture and lively atmosphere, especially as Carnival festivities sweep through the streets, promising unforgettable memories and new adventures at every turn.
